This refuge was established in 1957 to protect and preserve Key deer and other wildlife in the Florida Keys. The refuge now consists of approximately 9,200 acres and is home to 17 federally-listed species. Short-leashed dogs are welcome; they must be cleaned up after and should be kept away from the water's edge because of the danger of alligators.
