In 1846 when the Mormons arrived at the Missouri River, the US government made arrangements with the Indian nations to allow the Mormons to camp on the western side of the river for two years. The area became known as Winter Quarters. Today, a visit to the site will include a primitive log cabin, ox drawn covered wagons, hand-carts, and many other artifacts. There is also a cemetery across the street where many of the graves are from the Winter Quarters era. Well behaved, leashed pets are allowed on the grounds, but not in the buildings.
