Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens covers 700 acres and is part of Anacostia Park. It is the only National Park Service site devoted to the propagation and display of aquatic plants.
A Civil War veteran created the garden as a hobby and it was eventually operated for 25 years as a commercial water garden. In 1938, federal government bought the gardens and added it to the National Park system.
