This park sits on 25 acres along the waterfront. The historic fort was built from 1672 to 1695 and it served primarily as the Spanish Empire post which guarded St. Augustine. Its secondary purpose was to protect the sea route for Spanish treasure ships. Even though this fort served many different nations, it was never taken by force. The United States purchased the fort from the Spanish in 1821 and in 1924 the fort was declared a national monument.
