Tallgrass prairie once covered more than 140 million acres of the United States, from Indiana to Kansas and from Canada to Texas. Nearly all of it is gone, plowed under for agriculture. An ancient past survives in the irreplaceable Flint Hills tallgrass.

Leashed pets are allowed on two short walking trails, Southwind Nature Trail and Bottomland Trail, and in developed areas, such as picnic areas, parking lots, and along gravel and paved roads. Pets are not allowed in the buildings or on other park trails. Leashes must be no longer than six feet. Pets may not be left unattended in vehicles.
