This 76-mile reach of the Niobrara River in northcentral Nebraska preserves a superb example of a Great Plains river and protects a unique ecological crossroads where six distinct ecosystems and their associated flora and fauna mix. The western third of the Scenic River is home to over two hundred waterfalls. The highest is Smith Falls that plunges sixty-three feet over a sandstone cliff. Pets are allowed on the river, and it is suggested that you do not leash them in the boat in case of capsize. Leashed pets are welcome in Smith Falls State Park, at the Brewer Bridge Landing, on the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, and at Fort Niobrara. Leashes must be no longer than six feet.
