Established in 1851 as the guardian of the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Union was the largest fort in the American Southwest. The main park consists of 637 acres includes the site of a second fort (star fort), and 63 adobe building ruins at the site of a third fort. You can take the 1.6 mile, self-guided interpretive trail or opt for a shorter 0.5 mile self-guided tour. Leashed pets are permitted in the park, but are not allowed in the buildings. Leashes must be no longer than six feet.
