With so many pet friendly hotels to choose from, deciding where to stay is “ruff.” Knowing the hotel pet policies of major brands is a great place to start narrowing the options.

From weight restrictions to additional fees, hotel pet policies vary significantly from brand to brand. When you’re deciding where to stay, it helps to know which chains best align with your needs and desires … and which won’t work for you at all.

Knowing whether a hotel chain typically allows cats and other pets, how many pets are allowed per room, how much the chain usually charges in pet fees, and their general weight restrictions will help you focus your search.

So the next time you take a spontaneous road trip and want to know whether to turn toward the hotels listed on the right or left side of the highway interchange, we’ve got you covered. And for travelers who collect hotel points, see which brands offer loyalty programs to help you get the most for your miles.

Rating The Most Pet Friendly Hotels

We reviewed corporate pet policies and even looked at individual hotel pet policies to find which chains are best for pet travelers.

Points were assigned to a hotel for the following factors:

  • Affordable pet fees (No or refundable pet fees ranked highest. We also gave points if a hotel’s fees were less than 25% of an average night’s stay)
  • Whether cats or other pets are allowed
  • How many pets are allowed in a room
  • Whether the hotel has pet policies that are clear, complete, and easy to find online
  • Whether the hotel allows pets to be left unattended in a room
  • What amenities a hotel offers for pets

We also gave bonus points to a hotel if more than 90% of their locations were pet friendly and if they support pet rescue organizations.

So which are the best hotels for travelers with pets?

Best Hotel Chain For Traveling With Pets

Kimpton Hotels, part of the International Hotel Group, is absolutely the most pet friendly hotel chain in North America. They accept all pets, whether furry, feather, or scaly of any size for no pet fee. What hotel pet policy could be better than that?

In addition, you may leave your pet alone in the room (following their guidelines).

But with only 68 locations in North America, you might not be able to find a Kimpton everywhere you travel with your pets.

So which hotel chains have more locations and still meet the needs of pet travelers?

Good Hotel Chains For Pet Travelers

Determining the hotel chain most likely to meet the needs of the majority of people traveling with pets isn’t easy. A chain that works great for travelers with cats or single, small dogs might not work for someone with more than one pet or large dogs. But in our review, we discovered some stand-outs for pet travelers.

Best Western Hotel Group comes in at the top of our rankings for the hotel pet policies in many locations that allow up to two dogs, cats, and other pets and charge a per room instead of per pet fee.

Not far behind is Red Roof Inn for allowing pets – including cats – to stay for free. And they communicate their hotel pet policies very clearly, which is always a plus. But most locations only allow one pet.

If you aren’t aware of the Drury Hotel chain, you might want to check them out. This smaller hotel group allows pets in many of its locations. And they have a very clear and comprehensive hotel pet policy.

We also appreciate Extended Stay Suites for providing a standard pet policy across all their locations. That consistency gives people traveling with pets a reliable hotel choice without spending time researching the options.

The International Hotel Group is our top pick for a large hotel family with lots of brands. And yes, the Kimpton brand really makes IHG stand-out. But they have several other brands that also allow pets in the vast majority of their hotels, including Candlewood Suites, the boutique Hotel Indigos, and their all-suites hotel, Staybridge Suites.

Wondering how your favorite hotel chain came out in our rankings? Check out every pet friendly hotel group below.
