One of the pleasures of our “job” (if you can call it that) is researching pet friendly hotels. On our recent trip to Manhattan we stayed at Ink48, a new member of the Kimpton family. Located in a former printing house at 653 11th Avenue, this boutique hotel brings urban sophistication to Hell’s Kitchen.
The hotel amenities are top-notch … with Print restaurant, just off the lobby, offering sustainable fare, the lobby bar with it’s semi-private lounge areas, and Press, the rooftop restaurant and bar showcasing panoramic views of Manhattan and the Hudson River. Guests are also invited to enjoy the hosted evening wine hour, complimentary morning coffee and tea, and a state-of-the-art spa and fitness center.
All of those things are wonderful, no doubt – but what really matters to us is how welcoming and convenient the hotel is for pet travelers. In typical Kimpton fashion, we were not disappointed.
Although we did not have Ty and Buster with us on this trip, we knew from the moment we entered the hotel that pet friendliness is a priority.
The pet policy here is typical of the Kimpton hotels: dogs, cats and various other pets are welcome with no fees or deposits and no restrictions on weight or size. All pet guests at Ink48 receive a welcome email prior to their arrival, a plastic Ink48 dog tag, a treat, bottled water, waste bags, and tips on the best spots to sniff in the neighborhood. The hotel also provides a comfy bed and food & water bowls upon request.
For a $10 fee your pet can be treated to turn down service with a snack and “Good Bite” quote, an Ink48 leash, and a shiny Ink48 dog tag for their collar. For subscribers of FIDO Magazine, the hotel will even provide your pooch with a complimentary copy – in case they forgot to pack something to read.
With 203 guest rooms and 19 loft suites, the hotel offers a wide variety of room sizes and views. We were in a “king deluxe” room facing the river.
At 275 square feet, the room was nice-sized by New York standards – though with our rambunctious Buster and Ty in there it might have felt a tad small. If you prefer to stretch out, Ink48 has rooms as large as 600 square feet.
One of the greatest things about this hotel – at least for pet travelers – is its location. Convenient to the Javits Center and walking distance to Times Square, you’re just far enough removed to avoid the crowds during your evening stroll. The Hudson River Park, which runs from West 30th to West 59th, is just a couple of blocks away and we found three off-leash dog parks within easy walking distance!
The DeWitt Clinton Dog Park at 11th Avenue and 52nd Street has a separate area for large and small dogs.
The Pier 84 Dog Park is at 12th Avenue and 44th Street, and if your dog loves the feel of grass between his toes, you’ll find a nice spot to enjoy that on the pier as well. The pet friendly patio at PD O’Hurleys Bar & Grill, also at Pier 84, is a great place to grab a bite or settle in for a little people watching.
We spotted another dog park on 42nd between 11th and 12th that this little pooch had all to himself!
From great service and amenities, to nearby pet friendly activities and restaurants, Ink48 is one of the best pet friendly hotels in New York. We can’t wait to visit again and take the boys!
