Nestled in a forest of towering old-growth Douglas fir and cedar, this one-bedroom, one-bath cottage is perfect for a couple or a solo visitor (in a pinch, it can sleep up to 4). Hand-built and rustic, Eva's Cottage is also comfortable and cozy, with many luxurious touches like the new hot tub and deck, down comforter and pillows on the queen-size bed, and travertine/river rock shower. You'll love sleeping in the custom-built log bed -- truly one of a kind! View the River year-round from the expansive kitchen windows and the wrap-around porch, and seasonally from the rest of the cottage.
The greatroom is dominated by a massive, wood-burning stone fireplace, with antique casement windows that look out on woodland and river views. The den is a quiet, serene spot for reading or napping, and the kitchen is completely furnished to accommodate serious cooks, as well as those seeking a vacation from cooking.
In the well-equipped kitchen you'll find a programmable drip coffee maker, coffee filters, coffee grinder, a French Press, a Keurig machine, microwave, toaster oven, electric water kettle, placemats, cloth napkins, tea towels and a British hotel teapot with a copper cozy. All this is in addition to a full set of cookware, flatware, glasses, dinnerware for 4 and full-size appliances. Outside there's a gas grill for barbecues.
Amenities at Eva's Cottage include firewood, beach mats, and a cleanup kit/towels for canine guests. Apple (Internet) TV in greatroom and TV/DVD/stereo in bedroom (there is no TV reception -the trees are so large they block line of sight to satellites) are available for indoor entertainment, along with a nice selection of games and books. A good supermarket (Safeway), drugstore, and other services are about 14 miles away in the town of Washougal.
Sited on a picturesque bend in the Washougal River, this home sits in a shady, wooded spot right on the bank, with a short path down to a rocky, sandy beach, and directly across from a year-round waterfall and 20' swimming hole. No fishing is allowed here, but you can put your kayak or canoe in here, and watch as salmon make their way up to their spawning ground and fish hatchery, just a mile upriver. The beach has no public access, but is shared with guests at adjacent River Bend Lodge, and, from time to time, a few close, trusted, respectful neighbors. Most likely, you'll have it all to yourself, and can swim, wade and sunbathe to your heart's content. Your dogs will love it here - and they're more than welcome for a small nightly fee!
The surrounding forest is part of a 26-acre family compound that is shared with River Bend Lodge -- it can be rented together with Eva's Cottage, if your group is larger than four people. This property boasts multiple scenic trails that lead to old growth forests. The Blue, White, Yellow, and Red Trails offer ancient cedars, wildflowers, and even a traditional and recently restored cabin. Bring your hiking boots (and for two of the trails, flotation devices)!
The forest is filled with northwest native plants and old-growth trees. This little pocket is unique, since it was never logged; some of the trees here are more than 300 years old. You're likely to find deer strolling past the windows, grazing. Many kinds of birds, ducks, geese and other wildlife also call this wonderful spot home. Common visitors include eagles, heron, hawks, and deer. The land surrounding the Cottage and across the river is private and protected. The temperate climate is never too hot or too cold.
This retreat includes a large (and rare) stand of old-growth Douglas fir, Western cedar, hemlock and maple; some of which are estimated to be more than 300 years old. Eva's descendants steward the land and maintain the forest with an eye to future generations' enjoyment.
The Washougal River is one of only two completely unpolluted rivers in the region. All manner of outdoor activities are close by, yet the setting itself is secluded and free from the noise and distractions of everyday life. Eva's Cottage is a perfect launch pad, with easy, year-round access to hiking, boating, fishing, skiing and more. It River offers fine fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking as it flows into the mighty Columbia River just a few miles to the south.
Eva's Cottage is completely smoke-free; no smoking is allowed within 150 feet of the Cottage. Smokers must use the provided container and must douse smoking materials thoroughly. Please respect our irreplaceable forest.
Note: Beach fires and/or fishing from the beach are not allowed (there is great fishing just a mile downriver, on the other side of the Salmon Falls bridge).
* Please note that there is no cell service at this home.
