The tiny town of Hatteras has an outsize reputation thanks to its central location in North Carolina's Outer Banks and magnificent sand dunes. But perhaps it should be most famous for the way it welcomes pets.

Best Time To Visit
Of course, you want to visit beach during the summer. But so does everyone else. So if you enjoy being in the middle of the action, plan your trip for the high season.
But North Carolina starts warming up in April. And while you might not want to swim, your pup will be glad to not burn their paws.
You’ll find similar warm temperatures in the fall. Keep in mind that as things cool down, businesses start to close for the season.
Things Not To Miss
Take a ferry ride to the island. You and your pet will love spotting dolphins underway.
Once there, you’ll want to hike the dunes at the Hatteras National Seashore. Or head up and down the island visiting the many pet friendly beaches.
Of course, it’s not a visit to the shore without stopping for ice cream. You’ll find everything from frozen custard to homemade ice cream and gelato. And with walk-up windows for ordering, it’s a great way to cool off after a busy day with your pet.
